Over the course of 80 years, Filatura di Crosa has come to be one of the most recognizable international brands utilizing the great northern Italian wool tradition. The company was founded in 1939 by Ettore Fileppo in Crosa, a town located in the Biella province of Italy. Since the early 19th century, Biella has been renowned for textiles and high-quality production of fine wool and yarns.
During the fifties, the sons of Ettore, Germano and Giancarlo Fileppo expanded the butterfly brands product line beyond wool. Filatura di Crosa delved into producing with luxury materials such as mohair, cashmere, angora, alpaca, cotton, linen, and silk. The Fileppo brothers used more advanced technology and fostered creativity within the company, developing the unique handknitting products and fancy yarns Filatura di Crosa is still known for today.
In 1968, Filatura di Crosa survived a catastrophic flood that devastated the province of Biella. The flood nearly annihilated the entire network of wool manufacturing the region was so highly esteemed for. Thanks to the eternal relentlessness of the Biellese community, they were able to work together to overcome this great tragedy. They managed to transform this natural disaster into a cleansing of the community, an opportunity for renewal and rebirth as they modernized and reconstructed their home.
During the 70’s, Filatura di Crosa embarked on a new journey collaborating with top Italian fashion houses offering them exclusive branded yarns. Yarns co-branded with Missoni, Valentino, Versace, Krizia, and Coveri, designed by Filatura di Crosa created high-fashion pieces which were showcased on runways at international tradeshows. These incredible partnerships inspired and pushed the company to think more creatively and further elevated the status of the brand. In 1985, Filatura published the first ever handknitting magazine with pattern instruction which was translated into 4 languages and available 8 countries.
In keeping with tradition, Filatura di Crosa continues to produce the finest quality yarns made from the highest quality raw materials. Although ownership over the brand has changed over the years, the company continues to strive to live through and fulfil Ettore Fileppo’s original mission. Filatura di Crosa is still a family operation, making a conscious effort to estrange themselves from the corporate structure to maintain the brands integrity.
Filatura di Crosa is enhancing its globalization every day, drawing inspiration from across the world to establish new trends and styles with each passing season. We distribute across four continents in numerous countries and continue to look for new partners internationally. During our 80th anniversary, Filatura di Crosa will continue to listen to what our knitters have to say, catering to the needs of the handcraft market.
